Dude, even I can't figure out what's going on this season

There’s been a phrase that I’ve been repeating over and over the past couple of weeks while watching Heroes on NBC.  And that phrase pretty much goes like this:

“…the fuck?!?

This season didn’t start out that bad.  Not nearly as strong as the first season — which was damn good television up until the last five minutes — but at least as good as the second season, which was still watchable, if not excellent.  Then, things started to happen.

Seriously…the fuck?!?

Here be SPOILERS if you aren’t caught up to last week’s episode, “The Eclipse Part 2″

  • First, there was another solar eclipse — and those are how rare, exactly? — taking away everyone’s abilities.  And this is somehow a shock to everyone, even though we know that 1) the “grown-ups” at Primatech were around for the last eclipse, and 2) Adam Monroe’s been around since feudal Japan, and the first time we saw him was  when Hiro went back in time to another eclipse.
  • Why did Arthur make Hiro think he was 10, instead of you know, just killing him or taking his power?  And come to think of it, why didn’t he just take Papa Parkman’s power instead of just snapping his neck?  Or take his power, then snap his neck?  Either of those abilities would make him pretty much unstoppable, so he’s pretty short-sighted for an evil genius.
  • Also, Peter’s only native ability was to clone other people’s abilities, so why did Arthur get all the abilities that Peter acquired?  And hey, that brings up entirely new problems with my last point — if he has Peter’s ability now, shouldn’t he have already grabbed Parkman’s and Hiro’s and Speedy McCrippleson’s powers, too?
  • I don’t even know where to begin with Sylar and Elle…first she wants him to be good, then she provokes him into killing some random guy, then she wants him to be good again, then she tells him off when he acts like a bad guy.  Oh, and then he (apparently) kills her at the end of last week’s show, even though he already had her power and the whole point was that he didn’t kill for fun, he just did it so he could look at their brains and get their power (or whatever).
  • Even though Nathan went crazy at the end of last week’s episode and decided to do a complete 180 on everything he’s ever believed in and agree with his father, couldn’t he at least have given Peter a ride back to the States?  ”Call the dude at the embassy, he can give you a ride.” Way to be a douchebag to your brother, dude.

I guess we’ll see where tonight’s episode goes, but I’m unoptimistic.  At least there’s still a chance of the second half of this season being good.
