I was very tempted to open the thing up, but when I got my second warranty exchange back, it went straight to eBay for some other poor soul to deal with. Pretty fascinating stuff, though.

There was a huge push from within the company to ship something. This was a terrible decision, and really hurt the image of the company. The problems with the first gen DE were historic in nature. The design was about 2 years old, and was done by some really cheap contractors. If you ever opened the thing, you would see that the antennas were huge. Guess the higher ups decided to release a crappy piece of hardware with seriously buggy software. The software parts did get better with updates.... and was really amazing on the latest internal versions.

The answers you got from the marketing guys about the size of the device were obviously crap, and everyone knew it. Most of us hated the marketing guys trying to post on blogs and manipulate Amazon ratings, just felt really cheap.

In a way it’s really sad. We had been testing an internal version of the next gen DE with a sweet form factor, thin, wide-screen, designed by IDEO. There were some really cool design ideas (LED light pipes all around the screen...think visual indicator around the DE).
Unfortunately it never got to see the light of the day. The company was really top heavy towards the end, with too many clashing egos and more politicians than engineers. Once word leaked that the first gen had sold only 2K units, morale went south, and it seemed like people stopped caring. Oh and we did do an eval with Toyota, that went nowhere.

I love my Nuvi 265t (4:3 model) and I plan on posting a full review soon. Not sure about your model, but the widescreen doesn't really add much to the 265 except QWERTY input and you don't have to scroll down to get to your favorites. The screen size hasn't really been an issue for me, though.

Informative indeed sir. Sorry your unit crapped out on you. If it means anything I wish I would have gone with the wide screen nuvi instead of the standard.
