Heya thanks for the reply!

I've never liked Eastwood as a director to be honest.

High Plains Drifter is not his only film starring/directed by Clint that uses sexual violence against women. In a lot if his films especially in the pre PC days of the 1970s, there is either a rape scene or an attempted scene.

In Every Which way but loose, Sondra Lonke's snooty heiress in attacked. She is also attacked in the Outlaw Josey Wales. In Sudden Impact, both Locke and her sister are raped. It then follows that Clint is able to act as the avenging angel and exact the ultimate punishment.

Even his Oscar winning Unforgiven depicts a prostitute being mutilated by a cowboy.Once again, he exacts revenge on the criminals.

What does this say about Clint's attitude to women?

After Straw Dogs, this type of attitude to women was seen as acceptable.

It does not make it right.

Thanks! I haven't had a lot of time to sit around and blog lately as I do have a full-time job and other interests that are keeping me busy, and writing would take away from my general dicking-around time. But positive feedback from non-spammers always helps with motivation! In response to Million Dollar Baby, yes, I saw it, and I didn't particularly care for it. Mostly with Clint somehow getting away with felony murder. I wasn't sure if I should blame Paul Haggis (the screenwriter) or Clint the director for that one -- it turns out, I don't particularly care for either, so it was a Kobayashi Maru.

What can I say? Surely it's apparent that your opinion of this film is superior to mine, simply because it's yours. In fact, your obviously carefully constructed argument full of intellectually masturbatory words like 'subtext' and 'symbolism' has made me rethink even having a website, and I shall be closing it down and letting the domain expire shortly.

I think it's great that you like Unforgiven. Lots of people do, it won a fucking Oscar. But you're mistaken if you think there's any such thing as an unbiased and objective review. Perhaps I can direct you to a dictionary to look up the definition of 'criticism'. Or Google.

"Show, don't tell," may have originated as a writing convention, but perhaps you haven't reached the part in film school when they teach you that films begin as a screenplay that must first be written. May I also direct your attention to "On Directing Film" by David Mamet, which is pretty much entirely dedicated to applying this principal to filmmaking.

Despite your rage that someone on the internet has a poor opinion of a film you like, thanks for links! Tell all your friends how stupid I am. Maybe they think my opinion on the Muppets of Sesame Street is wrong, too.

And, for the record, Aliens is the fucking bomb.

...And "show, don't tell" is a writing convention, not a film convention. When I read that part I laughed out loud at you and forwarded the link to my fellow film students. "Show, don't tell" is going to be the punch-line all semester.

You may have a handle on N64 games, but you don't know what the fuck you're talking about when you write about film. You're not at all objective (the mark of a great review writer,) which immediately suggests that you are unable to watch a film objectively. Just because you need constant action to be entertained doesn't mean this movie doesn't play as though Eastwood were a modern day John Ford. (He was a director, by the way). Compared to to 'Unforgiven', 'Tombstone' was a car full of clowns; a kiddie flick, spoon-feeding western for the intellectually challenged; people who need their movies cut into smaller bits so they slide down without having to do any chewing. So your friends are wrong too.

This meticulously crafted, carefully edited and expertly cast film is what the entire western genre was leading up to. The subtext is rich and expansive and the symbolism is bold. This is a seminal work that will influence all westerns to come, as it did both 'The Proposition' and 'The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford'. This movie, though not my favorite western, is the best western ever made. Period.

Any moment now I expect you to publish another stack of bullshit explaining why The Terminator was somehow inferior to 'Terminator 2'. Or how 'Aliens' was somehow better than 'Alien'. Either way, you're just plain wrong. 'Unforgiven' is a modern classic.

Do yourself a favor and stick to reviewing video games. That way, right or wrong, you won't need to worry about anyone reading them and discovering you don't know shit about cinema. You may watch movies, but you sure as hell don't see them.
