The Lion’s share of Apple’s problems
5
You can say what you want about Steve Jobs, but the man likes his icons IN ROWS.
Did you ever wonder why Macs and other Apple products attract so much attention from both the tech and mainstream press, even though Mac users only account for 12% of the U.S. computer owning population?
Here’s the secret: it’s because most of those journalists and bloggers…studied journalism.
Apple basically invented desktop publishing with the Macintosh. Sure, in the early 1990′s you could get Photoshop or PageMaker for a PC. But Windows 3.1 just didn’t stack up to System 7 when it came to graphic design More >
What the hell is wrong with Microsoft?
4I’ve never really understood the devotion of die-hard Apple fanatics. You know the type: the ones who have owned all four versions of the iPhone, the ones who think the Apple TV was a good idea, the ones who will argue with a straight face that Aperture can be just as good as Photoshop.
I’ve often thought it must be hard to be an Apple fanboy. It’s not unlike being in an abusive relationship; no matter how much disdain Cupertino shows for their customers, they continue to make excuses, talk about how much they love their giant iPod, and bend over when Apple launches their next annual More >
DVR by the numbers: How much does owning a DVR really cost?
2Between my Western Digital external hard drive failing right outside of warranty, my frustration with TiVo’s decade-old interface, and service provider DVRs coming-up short, I’ve been thinking a lot about the personal TV choices available to me. And when I think about something a lot, it frequently leads to charts. Especially when money is involved.
So, during the process of sorting-out if I’m going to keep TiVo or ditch it for Moxi, or even a Vista CableCard Home Theater PC, I ran some numbers and came to some interesting conclusions. I compared the overall cost of ownership of different More >
Dash Express GPS Post-Mortem
5When I last wrote about the Dash Express GPS unit, I was hopeful. The unit had its problems, but the company seemed headed in the right direction. That was a while ago. Since then, I had to trade in two (2) defective units, and the company announced they would switch to being a software provider only and would no longer be making their own hardware. Oh, and they played the CEO shuffle and laid-off 50 employees.
What happened?
The most obvious problem with the Dash Express was the hardware. The thing was massively huge, and Dash’s reasoning for this was that they had packed so much stuff More >
Guess I’m going to have to buy Aliens again…
1Black Friday last week was kind to me, as I was able to acquire a Sony BDP-S350 Blu-Ray player greatly discounted. I was quite unimpressed with my first shopping experience at Conn’s, however, which is like an electronics store staffed entirely with the pathetic salesmen from Glengarry Glenn Ross. A trip to Fry’s netted me a high-quality OEM HDMI cable for $7 and a 45 minute wait in line, and Best Buy’s sales graced me with BD’s of Pixar’s Cars and 300 - about opposite ends of the spectrum as far as family friendliness is concerned, but both great movies and excellent showcase discs.

Good times on the Web
3I’ve gushed before about my web browser preferences, but these are exciting times for web surfers. Since the world-wide-web came into existence, web browsers have been like Sith – there are only two…two that count, anyway. And just like Sith, they may play nice while secretly desiring to destroy the other and rule the universe web. In the early days, it was Netscape dueling it out with Mosaic. That eventually turned into Internet Explorer vs. Netscape, which gave way to the Firefox/IE deathmatch. Web browsers have been like the de-facto two-party American political system, with fringe More >
Thoughts on big breasted women with swords and the importance of data backups
2Warning: incomprehensible nerdish ahead. Translation follows after the next two paragraphs.
This seems an impractical choice of attire for a swordfight.
While browsing Digg just the other day, my monitor started to display all sorts of strange artifacts. Being the sensible, computer-literate type, I decided to reboot to attempt to fix the problem. Not only was I greeted with more strange dots and artifacts upon boot (never a good sign), Windows failed to boot and mumbled something about video driver issues and memory dump while exposing me to a bright blue screen. The next time I powered More >
