The end of an era
4The other day, a very sad thought occurred to me. The advent of digital cable means the death of scrambled cable porn. What was once a proud ritual of pubescent boys, switching over to the PPV channels late at night and watching the scrambled feed — “Is that a boob or an elbow? I think I just saw a vagina!” — that ritual is now dead. Bonding with other boys at a sleepover, inside jokes about the terrible music…all gone. It’s a sad, sad day for American youth.
"Those were the daaaaaaaaaaaayyysss..."
I believe a moment of silence is in order.
DVR by the numbers: How much does owning a DVR really cost?
1Between my Western Digital external hard drive failing right outside of warranty, my frustration with TiVo’s decade-old interface, and service provider DVRs coming-up short, I’ve been thinking a lot about the personal TV choices available to me. And when I think about something a lot, it frequently leads to charts. Especially when money is involved.
So, during the process of sorting-out if I’m going to keep TiVo or ditch it for Moxi, or even a Vista CableCard Home Theater PC, I ran some numbers and came to some interesting conclusions. I compared the overall cost of ownership of different More >
Na-na-na na, na-na-na na, hey heyyyyy, goodbye cable modem
3I’ve mentioned before the issues I was having with my cable internet service. Well, now that I’m no longer an unemployed guy with too much free time, and I’m now officially a telecommuter (there are surprising similarities, except now I’m paid, so that’s nice), my internet connection is very important. And my Time Warner connection started dropping, routinely, in the morning, and coming back sometime around 7:00 or 8:00 in the evening. Customer service was no help, and the technician they were supposed to send never showed, never called, and no one followed up on the open service call. More >
How old is this modem, anyway?
0I’ve already chronicled my recent cable internet problems, but some good did come out of the whole situation. I learned that Motorola SurfBoard cable modems have a diagnostic page built in that you can access by visiting http://192.168.100.1 – it even works when your computer is behind a router! If you’re experiencing problems with your cable internet, and you hate calling tech support as much as I do, you can access this page to see if you can figure out the problem by yourself. If you don’t know what any of it means (I honestly don’t, either), you can do some quick googling and probably More >
Held hostage by cable
2My cable internet service went out for about half of last week, which served to remind me how important Internet access really is, and how little choice I have in my area. In the last eight years, I’ve had uninterrupted cable internet service, but thanks to mergers and market trade-offs, I’ve changed cable companies four times. The last time, it was when Comcast and Time Warner Cable divvied up a competitor and decided to trade customers in certain markets, just like that. I can’t imagine any other industry where this is possible, can you? It’d be like you had a flight booked on American More >
